For my garden cleanup, Kela, Ben, Ryan, and I all decided that we wanted to do the garden cleanup. I personally wanted to do this, because we wanted to give back to give back to Mr. Bursch for all the work he put in to maintain the chickens and the fun classroom experiments that we do. Plus, I thought it would be fun working in the garden with my friends for 2 hours, as I find working in the garden fun and entertaining. I could not wait to see what Mr. Bursch had in store for us.
Day 1: I could only stay for one hour today, because swimming was starting at 3:30. Once the bell rang, Ryan, Kela, and I (along with Marcus and Anthony, but Ben had to be at Band that day), went to the shed with Mr. Bursch and got 4 shovels, a thick metal rake, and 2 wheel barrels. We all put on a pair of gloves, and wheeled the wheel barrels to 2 piles of mulch. We then scooped the mulch into the wheel barrels until they were full.We then followed Mr. Bursch around the school as he showed us places where new gardens and plants will be grown later. After a while, we arrive at our destination. It was on the other side of the school, and we had to fill up a strip of tanbark alongside a building with the mulch. We dumped out the wheel barrels, and Kela, Anthony, and Ryan went back to get more mulch as Marcus and I stayed to spread out the mulch a few inches deep. We were using a shovel and the rake, and halfway through, the rake broke and the tri-tip came off! We still used it, but it was pretty difficult. Once the others arrived and dumped the barrels, Ryan stayed behind with us to help us with spreading the mulch (he had a shovel too, luckily). After spreading that 2 piles of mulch, we spread 6 more piles of mulch, and then we were finished with that lane. By this time, it was 3:30, so we all left, and Mr. Bursch we would do more work like this later on Tuesday.
Day 2: We arrived once again at 3:30, and this time it was Kela, Ben, Ryan, Anthony, Marcus, Nick, and I doing the garden cleanup. Mr. Bursch had us move the mulch to the chicken area to replace the mulch/tanbark there. Ryan and Ben stayed at the chicken area, while Marcus and I wheeled the wheel barrels from the mulch piles to the chicken area. Kela, Anthony, and Nick stayed at the mulch piles to put the mulch in the wheel barrels when we were ready. During this, we realized scooping from the bottom instead of the top was a lot more effective. After an hour of working, we were finally finished in the beating sun.
What we learned: We learned how to use shovels and rakes, how to properly pick up mulch, and how to spread out mulch. We also learned how to help the garden and had a lot of fun doing it. I think I’ll be doing this for my community service hours now! Before: Pics 1-3
