Before garden clean-up, the main problem was that the weeds and grass were overgrown. They were blocking out the sunlight for all of the other plants and were essentially taking over the garden. So during this project I spent most of my time weeding.
On Tuesday the 28th, I worked on the lavender bush specifically for about half an hour. I finished that section of the garden so the next day I moved on to 1st Period's planter. I found I worked much faster the second day but it's possible that the grass was simply less dense. I completed weeding that entire planter in only 45 minutes. The entire next week I was out sick, so gardening wasn't really an option.
When I came back, I noticed that the plants in that planter had increased exponentially in size and were much healthier overall. Without the weeds stealing the sunlight and nutrients in the ground, the plants were able to take a rejuvenating week and grow.
It was back to work on my final day, Tuesday the 14th, otherwise known as Pi Day! I was eager to finish my work in the hot sun and go home to make a pie with my friend in honor of the day (I'm a nerd I know, but I will take any excuse to eat baked goods). I still had about 45 minutes left to do so instead of just waiting around, my friend decided to pitch in. A lot more people were working that day, especially compared to it being just me the other days I worked. Most of the jobs were already taken or completed once we started, so my friend and I just touched up and finished the remaining weeding.
After all the handwork me and the rest of the garden clean-up crew put in the past few weeks, the garden looks amazing! Before it was difficult to distinguish between Brassica Oleracea plants and weeds but now, the brassicas are flourishing and the rest of the garden looks wonderful as well.
