4th Quarter Garden Cleanup Ana M

Hi, My name is Ana Montero and I am in 6th Period Biology and this is the summary of my Garden Cleanup experience for my 4th quarter E.S.L.P Project. I chose to do Garden Cleanup as it has been enjoyable the last couple of times and I like making the school look nicer, especially the gardens themselves. I split my time between two days, Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th.

For Day One of my time I cut weeds and picked up trash with a small group at one of the gardens between us and the Middle School. At first we started off slowly, as the day was warmer than most of us expected but then we kicked it up a notch and started pulling weeds faster. One of the people in the group accidentally pulled out a tree sapling that looked like a very large weed. It was not a good start to the afternoon but we pushed through and made it through the day with two buckets of weeds and one bucket of trash.

For the second day I spent the afternoon cleaning up a small rectangle patch near the math wing with two other people and refilling it with new mulch. Not a lot happened compared to the first day, we kept finding spiders and roly-polys and having to carefully relocated them to the new garden without dropping them or getting bit by a spider. We finished just in time to go home.

ESLP Garden Cleanup Round 4

For my final ESLP project of the year in Mr. Bursch's Honors Biology class, I decided to help out our school garden by helping cleanup the plants in the center of our student parking lot. With only a bucket and some shovels, I managed to make some great progress in cleaning up dead plants as well as picking up litter disposed on the soil.  I did so two weeks ago on Wednesday and Thursday with my fellow classmates.

5/16- During this day our teacher set us into to groups and sent us on our way to different locations in the garden or around the school to clean-up. He sent me and three of my classmates to the center of the student parking lot to clean up all of the trash and dead plants on the soil and around the larger plants in the center. Once there, we did a quick cleaning up and threw away all of the trash that was in our way. Next we took out our shovels and dug out little plants that were affecting our much larger and older plants that we wanted to keep because of how great they looked. Also because they were in a perfect spot and we would not want any other plants growing off of it to make it look almost gross. Finally we realized that this certain plant needed no water because it is meant for high heat and that made our job a lot easier.

5/17- Second day of our garden clean-up adventure. I got back into my same group and area and just went to work with cleaning anything that I could to make our spot look perfect. Mr Bursch came out and checked on us to see if we were doing the right thing and noticed that we should get really into the thick of the plant even though we were frightened by the bees....In conclusion this round of ESLP was not only fun to help keep our school looking "Shiny" but also was a great experience as I felt closer with my school and my garden.

Here are some pictures of our garden clean-up.......

1)The anatomy of the Brassica oleracea that shows the most variation are the leaves because when the plant starts to sprout the leaves grow, the leaves grow in different shapes and sizes depending on the plant.

2) There are all different vegetables that are all products of artificial selection Brassica oleracea. Possible mutations for a Brassica Oleracea can happen by soaking a seed in 5% EtOH, seed extractions for 48 hours. Natural selection is thought as "the survival of the fittest". When a new plants grows it carries some of the traits from the parent offspring

3)The anatomy of the Brassica oleracea that seems to be the same are the leaves they aren't identical but they're similar. They're different plants in the garden but they're leaves are similar for each plant.I think this because if you look at the garden the there's different plants but the leaves that go with that plant are similar to each other.

4) The plant breeders wouldn't really have to do anything order to find the anatomy ( leaves) the leaves are clearly visible when looking at the plant because its on the outside of the plant and they're big enough to be seen.

chicken coop clean-up

On Thursday lizette and I started off by cleaning the container that the chickens grew up in,we refilled they're water tank, and scooped up their poop up.Later on Friday we went back and Adam came along and helped scoop up the mulch so we can put it in the chicken coop. Lastly, we came back Tuesday and finished putting in the mulch and setting it down and we cleaned the chicken bed.

Garden Cleanup Round 4 -Nick Fordyce

For my ESLP Project the 4th time around I did Garden Cleanup again. This time we were instructed to pull weeds and basically cleanup up the parking lot garden. I did this the first day for about a hour and got some pretty productive work done as you can see in the project. The second day we did the same because we were yet to finish the work on the first day. After the second day the garden looked very good and close to spotless. What I learned from this time around is how to properly clean up the garden with taking out the weeds and cleaning up the trash and other stuff. These pictures above show the progress and the starting position made from this project.

BioSite

During the first day of teaching our group (like most) had a slow start with the first rotation of fourth graders. It was the same as the last biosite last semester. After a few minutes we managed to break though to the fourth graders during the ICE BREAKER that Heydi came up with. Emily had used a similar game with the forth graders last semester. After the icebreaker we passed the photos of the pollinators around to the fourth graders and asked what was one thing that they found similar. They had come up with many different similarities, but the main thing we where looking for was the fact that the pollen was stuck to the pollinators. We then asked them about the things that they already knew about pollinators. After they gave us a few facts we transitioned the conversation over to the flowers. After a few minutes of flowers we brought out the flowers and gave each fourth grader a flower to break apart and find the different parts of the flowers. While they where breaking up the flowers Natalia and I switched on the microscopes and Heydi opened up the poster she made. After they where done ripping up the their flowers we had them look at the poster and name the different parts of the flower that they ripped open. After each of them named the different parts of their flower we had them take turns looking through the microscopes to take a closer look at what they had done. Each group went like this throughout the first day of teaching, all but the introduction. We where able to better go through the icebreaker WAY more smoothly.
During the second day of teaching Heydi and Natalia couldn't make it to teach, so Alias was moved to my group to help me teach. Things went the same way as the first day with all but one group . We had used the same icebreaker that my group used during the first teaching day. Anyway during one of the groups we had a minor......Bullying problem. A few of the girls started teaming up against one girl, who seemed VERY exited about BioSite and couldn't seem to stop talking about it.

Garden Cleanup b Chase Lyles

For our last E.S.L.P. I chose to do Garden Cleanup because I wanted to help the environment around me the best way I can.

Day 1. For our first day I had to pick the weeds from the garden by the nurse's office. Throughout the hole garden there were were many weeds and even more dead plants. Also there was a good amount of trash in the garden. It took me about 45 mins to pick up all of the trash and weeds from the garden, we filled about 4 buckets.
Day 2. For my second day my team and I  had to move compost into its own stall. Then we had to move the 2 piles that were in the parking lot to were the compost was. This took a little longer than expected because one of my teammates spilled the wheelbarrow 2 separate times. It was all good in the end and this was about 1 hour and 45 mins.

Garden cleaup

In this round of garden cleanup I worked on picking the weeds in the parking lot garden. Me, and a few others gloved up, took a shovel, and went to work, getting all of the weeds away from the plants in the garden. This is important because these plants for 1, can harm the plant that is already there, which we want to keep healthy, and 2 they need to be picked so the maintenance workers at the school don't poison them. The issue is, if the weeds are not picked, the maintenance workers come by and spray pesticides on them, which kills the weeds but can get on the plants that we want to keep alive, which injures and kills them. So picking is the most effective method of keeping the weeds away, and that is exactly what we did, picked the weeds with our gloved hands, and tools, so the plants could healthily stay alive.

Chicken Coop Clean Up

So on a tuesday my friends and I all went to go ask Mr. Bursch if there was anything that i could do because he said he was pretty full but, thankfully he had a spot open for me. So one day i went after school to go clean up the chicken coop and Mr. Bursch told me to pick up the molch and put it in the chicken coop and he said that the decomposed molch to put it in the waste section of the graden. So the next day I had to do the same thing but instead this time i had to organize the molch in the chicken coop and spread it around and other stuff. Finally we all completed the service project and the chicken coop was looking nice and organized for the chickens.

ESLP Clean-up by Abel Spackman

For the final round of ESLP, I chose to do garden clean-up. I did this because I wanted to contribute to the school garden. I did this on a Wednesday and a Thursday doing one hour each day.

5/16- First day of garden clean-up. We got in group and I cut most of the dead grass surrounding the Kohlrabi plants and helped take out all of the weeds. This allows the Kohlrabi plants to grow without the interference of weeds taking the water and the grass blocking the sunlight. We cut out grass and pulled out weeds for one hour.

5/17- Second day of garden clean-up. I got back in the same group as last time and finished cutting all of the grass. I then helped pull out some large plants which had died and were simply taking up space in the garden. After pulling them out, we put them in the compost pile. After finishing that, we pulled out some more weeds. In total this took another hour.

ESLP Garden Clean Up by Steven Trujillo

For the last round of ESLP projects I signed up for Garden Clean Up. I choose this selection because I thought it would be cool to work on the garden and pick up new skills in the process. On Friday I showed up to the class and started garden clean up. For the first hour we moved a big pile of dirt to this container and laid down wood boards to stop mingling. We did this by shoveling dirt into buckets and transporting it to the container. Then we laid down the boards to create flat surface that will stop the mingling. Now for the second hour of garden clean up we transported piles of gravel and sand to the area we just cleared in hour one. We did this by filling wheel barrows and bringing them over. We found this very hard because some fell off the wood board and we dropped two wheel barrows full and had to clean it up. Finally we put away all the supplies and were done. I can take away that shoveling is back breaking work and to try not to make messes because they are hard to clean like when we dropped the wheel barrow.

ESLP garden cleanup By Antonio Arcoraci

For the final and last ESLP project i chose to do garden cleanup because i think garden are nice and should be treated with care. When i did garden cleanup it was not the first time i did it before i have to say it is pretty fun. My job was to pick up trash around the garden i must say when i picked up trash from the garden it was very dirty it might be from the students they might throw it on the ground. I did not care at all to pick up another person trash and throw it away so that the garden can stay clean. After i was done with picking up trash around the garden i did was pulled weeds growing inside and around the garden. I used a shovel to get the weeds growing in the garden. The shovel was probably the best tool in the garden to pull out weeds with in my opinion the weeds growing inside the garden i used my hands to pull them out. After i was done pulling out the weeds i put all the weeds in a bucket and put them in the compost bin. Then me and adien used scissors to trim the garden beds all of them when we were done we put some of the dry grass in the compost bins. Finally when i was done picking up trash, pulling out weeds, trim the garden beds and putting the weed and dry grass in the compost bins i used a broom to sweep up all the dirt from the weeds and the dust from the dry grass in the garden beds.

ESLP Final round Garden Cleanup

For this round of Ecology Service Learning Project, I did garden cleanup. For the first hour of garden cleanup, I had pulled out the weeds near the garden beds and on the pathways. I had also filled the compost piles with the weeds and piled mulch on top.  For my second hour of garden cleanup, I continued weeding the areas which need to be weeded. I took out a few of the useless plants in the garden beds with others as well. Also, I had continued to dump more of the plants and weeds into the compost pile, and filled the rest of the space with mulch.
