For this service round I chose to do garden cleanup. I worked outside in the garden after school for a total of two hours. Both days I went, I helped with piling mulch in a wheelbarrow several times. With that fresh mulch, me and a couple others used shovels to spread it all over the dirt that had previously been the ground for the garden. The purpose of putting a new layer of mulch in the garden is to suppress slow moisture evaporation and to break down soil gradually. Mulch helps moderate soil temperatures. The only area I put the mulch in was in and around the chicken coop because that’s what I was instructed to do. This has taught me that mulch has a way bigger purpose than just covering ground and making it look nicer.

Bobbys Garden Cleanup
For my service project I did the garden cleanup. For the garden clean up I went around the whole school and picked up trash around each garden (or just any place with plants that had trash) and picked up all the trash. That took around an hour to get around the whole school and pick up all the trash we see. Sometime we would find trash in the little trees around the middle of it. Sometimes it was under the tree also which made it hard to get to the trash because people around that area had a lot of different kinds of trash but the one that we mainly saw were napkins or chip packs.
For the second part of my service project we went to the main garden and we pulled weeds out of the sides of the garden. This took an hour also. This was kind of hard because you had to make sure the roots came out of the ground so it wouldn't grow back while trying to keep all of the dirt in the ground while we pull. I learned that the plants in the corner that looked like they had a kind of fur on them have spikes on them and it stings when you touch them and it didn't feel very nice. But overall the garden cleanup was a very fun experience.

This is the plant we picked up trash

This is behind the school where the bark is we picked up a lot of trash
here.

Hingano's Garden Clean-Up Part 2
Date:3/1/19
Period.5

Day One:
what me and my friends did for garden clean up for the first day was
picking up trash. We went to all the gardens around the school picking up trash around the plants. It's took us 1 hour to pick up trash around the gardens.I think this was fun because you get to have sometime with your friends cleaning up all the gardens. And helping each other out with things.
Me and my friends enjoyed having time together. This is what we did for the first day of garden clean up.
DAY TWO:
This was going to be our last day cleaning. what me
and my friends did was take out grass. And put them
in a pile. It took us an hour to do this. That was the only
hour we needed to complete our hours. To be honest
garden clean up it so fun. It's fun because you get to
help the environment with your friends. Me and my
friends really enjoyed it. I hope we can do this again.
This is what we did for the last hour of our clean up.

Garden Clean up

I Really enjoyed doing garden clean up, because it gave me a chance to learn about different type of plants. I also learned about how to prevent weeds/crab grass in the future. The way you prevent grass from growing again, is by mulching. Mulch is any material that is spread or laid over the surface of soil as a covering. Mulch doesn't only suppress weed, But it also helps retain moisture in the soil, and keeps the soil cool when its hot outside. Mr. Bursch had people mulch around the Brassica plants that classes planted in the beginning of the year. This helps it look more presentable are it creates a natural fertilizer after decaying.
While cleaning up the garden, i got to learn about what plants are edible. For example, you can eat the yellow flowers from a broccoli plant. You can also eat the rose bud, and rose petals. Another reason why doing garden clean up is important is because, By cleaning up the garden, we help keep the world and our school healthy and clean. If people in the world don't start picking up their plastic bottles, and pieces of trash then our world will die. We only get one Earth, we NEED to keep it healthy. If we can create some kind of good impact on society and they world by having high school students pick up trash, i think we are doing the right thing. At the end of garden clean up, we ended up with a bucket full of trash.

Staffny's Garden Cleanup
As a part of garden clean up, I pulled out extra grass in the pathway between the plants to make the area look more neat and clean. I also pulled out extra grass on the edges outside of the boxes the plants were in. The grass that I pulled out was placed on extra grass growing next to the plants to reduce the competition. The grass that was pulled out can cover the grass growing next to the plant and can kill it by "suffocating" it. It will block sunlight from hitting the grass so the grass won't be able to grow. Therefore, the Brassica Oleracea plants have a better chance and can more easily get the nutrients they need to grow. |
Gurjot's garden cleanup post
I worked on pulling out extra grass on the sides of the box where the plants are planted to make the area look neat and clean. The extra grass that I pulled out I placed it in the box. I also pulled the grass that was on the pathway to clear out the area. I placed that grass in the box covering other grass next to the other plant to reduce the competition. The grass that was pulled out can cover the grass growing next the plants and kill it. It can cause the plant to not get enough sunlight so it doesn't grow. I also worked on cutting extra grass growing near the plants inside the box into 3-4 pieces and then I placed the cutted grass pieces inside the box.
Christian De Jesus's Garden Clean Up 1st Day

In my first day of the Garden Clean Up is this small wooden like structures just need to move to the chicken house nearby in the parking lot. I worked hard shoveling from the pile. It hurts behind the back of the bow and doing the sand. But its okay I still have my body. So I took an hour and a half minutes. Do not give up because it also exercises our body. We need that body to not weaken the activities. It's a good thing to help you because it's hard to find someone running out of air in other words. It's hard to breathe that time because it's cold. But my body is still weak. I had a great skill at that time. So we need help to finish the task just as it is getting and doing. It's fun to be happy even if you still stay happy not to think that it's harder to work. Especially if it is more fun with chicken poultry. The others are afraid of the chickens so we can grow stronger with them.

Omar Villalobos's Garden Cleanup #3
In this garden cleanup , me and my friends worked very hard to move the dirt to the box. We worked hard for two hours , and learned a lot from it. I have matured a lot from this experience by working hard and working with my teammates. we also were taking care of the chickens , and they looked very hapy after we took care of them. I also bonded with my classmates. I hope that we do this again because this was a great experience to take part in.

Hugo Waterfall's Fall Garden Cleanup #3
During my two hours in the garden, a group of three other classmates and I worked hard shoveling mulch from the pile seen in the first picture into a wheelbarrow. We then took turns spreading said mulch around the chicken coup, our final result shown in the second and third picture. I think we really improved the state in which these chickens live in and also the garden as a whole. The last half-hour was spent working with the actual plants that are being grown. Here, we pulled the weeds in the pathways and I carefully trimmed the grass around the "merchandise", being careful to not accidentally cut the plants. My efforts turned the overgrown plot into a tidier display of the plants, as seen in the final picture, bettering the garden and the organisms in it.
